How to Clean and Store Baby Pacifiers

Clean pacifiers using the method their manufacturer allows, let them cool and dry as directed, and store clean ones separately from used ones. A pacifier that has fallen on the floor belongs in the used group until it has been cleaned.

Most of the daily confusion happens between uses. One pacifier is in a coat pocket, another is beside the sofa, and nobody knows which one is ready. Give clean and used pacifiers separate places so the next person can tell which one is ready.

Read the care instructions before the first use

Different materials and designs can have different cleaning limits. Do not assume that every pacifier, clip, case and teether can go through the same boiling, steam or dishwasher cycle. Keep the instructions or a photo of them where other caregivers can find them.

The American Academy of Pediatrics' pacifier guide advises following the manufacturer's cleaning directions, with frequent thorough cleaning during the first six months. Check for trapped hot water before offering a cleaned pacifier, and replace worn or damaged ones. A clean item can still be unsuitable if its nipple is torn or its parts are deteriorating.

Give clean and used pacifiers different places

Choose a clean storage case or covered container for ready-to-use pacifiers. Put used ones in a separate washable container until you can clean them. Both containers need care too; a freshly cleaned pacifier should not go back into a dirty case.

Try the system for a day before buying several organizers. You may find that one spot in the kitchen and one travel case are enough. If two adults share care, agree which container means “ready” rather than relying on who remembers the last wash.

Item What to check
Pacifier Cleaning method, condition and replacement guidance
Storage case Whether it is clean and ready for a dry pacifier
Clip or holder Its own cleaning instructions and attachment condition
Spare for an outing Clean, protected and separate from the used one

Clean a clip as a separate accessory

A pacifier holder combines parts that may need different care from the pacifier itself. Detach the accessory when cleaning as its instructions require. Inspect the connector and clip, and stop using it if anything is damaged or loose.

Vesta Baby's silicone pacifier clip and teether holder sets are an accessory option for supervised awake use. Follow the set's instructions and check compatibility with your pacifier. A holder does not make a dropped pacifier clean, and it does not belong in a baby's sleep space. Never fasten a pacifier around a baby's neck or to a crib.

If you are choosing a connector style, our pacifier clip fit guide explains what to look at before buying. Care and fit are worth checking together: an attractive accessory still needs to work with the items you already use.

Pack a spare without packing a whole drawer

For a short outing, put a clean spare in its protected case and leave room for the used one to come home separately. Do not return the used pacifier to the spare's clean compartment just to keep the bag tidy.

Once home, empty the used container with the rest of the items that need washing. Then replenish the bag. This is easier to remember when it is part of unpacking rather than a separate task discovered at the front door the next morning.

Questions about everyday use

Does a clip mean the pacifier will never touch the floor?

No. A clip is not a guarantee against drops or dirt. Check what happened to the pacifier and clean it when needed.

Can I boil every part together?

Only if each item's instructions permit that method. Check the pacifier, holder and case individually; do not transfer a temperature or timing instruction from one product to another.

What if my baby does not want a pacifier?

Do not force it. The AAP also advises against using a pacifier to delay feeding a hungry baby. Cleaning and storage routines are useful only for the items your family actually uses.
